Our son was displaced when the Plymouth NK closed. Hopkins NK welcomed him from the very beginning. The thing I appreciate most as a parent is that they always let you know what to expect for practice times, and any holiday closures well in advance. They encourage the students to get to know one another, which we really appreciate for our shy son. We love this place.

Although my son didn’t want to participate they were very good with trying to make him feel comfortable. Hopefully he will change his mind because they were great with him!

FAQs

Our Youth Karate Program is designed specifically for children ages 7–12. This age range captures the perfect balance between physical coordination and emotional maturity. Kids at this stage can follow multi-step instructions, work well in groups, and build the focus and confidence needed for long-term success in martial arts and school.

No experience is required. Most of our students begin as beginners with little to no martial arts background. Each child progresses at their own pace with individualized guidance from our certified instructors. We emphasize a supportive, non-competitive environment where effort is celebrated just as much as achievement.

Belt testing is based on skill development, focus, effort, and attitude, not just physical performance. Students are evaluated regularly to ensure they understand techniques, show respect, and demonstrate self-discipline. Each new belt represents genuine progress and builds lasting self-esteem.

Parents often notice improvements in focus, self-control, and listening skills within the first few months. Kids gain the confidence to take on challenges, follow through with responsibilities, and show respect for teachers and peers. These benefits carry over to the classroom, home, and extracurricular activities.

We recommend attending two classes per week for consistent progress and confidence-building. However, even one class per week can provide meaningful benefits, especially when reinforced with at-home practice and parental encouragement.

For the first session, comfortable athletic wear is perfect. Once enrolled, students receive an official karate uniform, which helps build unity, discipline, and pride in their training. The uniform also allows instructors to observe proper technique and movement more easily.

Every child learns differently. Our instructors adjust teaching styles and offer one-on-one encouragement to ensure all students feel confident and supported. Whether your child is shy, energetic, or highly competitive, our goal is to nurture progress at a pace that fits their personality and comfort level.

No. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. Karate teaches self-control, patience, and respect, not aggression. Students learn that martial arts are about discipline and defense, not fighting. Kids quickly learn to manage emotions, stay calm under pressure, and use their skills responsibly.

Safety is our top priority. Every class is taught by certified instructors in a controlled environment. Students are closely supervised, and techniques are introduced progressively to prevent injuries. Protective gear is used when appropriate, and all movements are taught with safety and control in mind.

Yes. Parents are always welcome to observe. Many enjoy watching their child’s confidence grow and witnessing their progress firsthand. Our dojos are designed to promote community involvement because family support plays an important role in each student’s success.

Karate requires kids to listen carefully, repeat movements with precision, and maintain attention during each exercise. Over time, these habits build stronger mental focus, patience, and perseverance, skills that directly translate to schoolwork, sports, and social behavior.
